ATL COMMENT ON RETENTION OF STUDENTS ON HIGHER EDUCATION COURSES

20 February 2008

Dr Mary Bousted, Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) general secretary, said:

“Helping a wider range of students get into higher education should be more than just a numbers exercise. There needs to be more, and better, advice and guidance for prospective students, and improved funding for students from non-traditional backgrounds.

“And universities must recognise that some students from disadvantaged backgrounds need different support and help from that of their traditional intake of students.

“A successful application to do a degree is the beginning, and not the end, of improving access to higher education and widening participation.”
