ATL COMMENT ON CHANGES TO OFSTED INSPECTION REGIME

19 May 2008

Nansi Ellis, Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) head of education policy, said:

“Ofsted needs to decide whether it is going to offer genuine support to schools to improve the education they offer, or whether its inspections will continue to be seen as a punitive and based on increasingly discredited data.

“Teachers expect to be held accountable, but this is not the best way to do it. We need an inspection system that is fit for purpose.

“Support from parents is vital if schools are to do the best for their children. Parents should work in partnership with schools to ensure pupils are supported and challenged to learn and achieve their potential.

“We would like parents to take any concerns about a school to the school itself in the first instance with the confidence the school will sort out any problems.”
