AQA's response to Michael Gove's GCSE announcements

26 June 2011

In response to the announcement by the Secretary of State, Michael Gove, on the Andrew Marr show this morning, that for two-year GCSE courses starting in September 2012 all examinations will be sat at the end of the course and that early entry and/or re-sitting of units will then no longer be possible, Andrew Hall, Chief Executive of AQA said:

"We have been saying for some time that the potential negative impact on learning caused by the increase in early entry and resits.

"Clearly, we haven't yet seen the detail of this new policy and so can’t comment fully until then. However, I would very much welcome a more balanced approach which guards against repeated resits becoming the norm while allowing for a second chance when a capable student sitting an exam genuinely has a bad day."
