Press Release
ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR REVIEW ANNOUNCED
7 June 2006
The new Leadership at Camden Council affirmed its commitment to a safer Camden by announcing an investigation into the most effective ways to tackle anti-social behaviour, today (Wednesday 7 June).
The Leader and Deputy Leader, Cllrs Keith Moffitt and Andrew Marshall, also confirmed that work to tackle anti-social behaviour will continue as usual while they review what works best for Camden.
Details will be decided over the coming weeks and will include a thorough investigation into the effectiveness of anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOs) in Camden. It will also look at the support the council and partners offer to steer potential offenders away from trouble.
The investigation will be done over the coming months and the new administration’s approach to tackling anti-social behaviour, based on its findings, drawn up in the autumn.
Announcing the move, Cllr Keith Moffitt, Leader of Camden Council said:
“What we’ve been hearing on the door step is that everyone wants safe homes, streets, parks and playgrounds. We want to hear from the community and the professionals involved about what works, so we can do more of it while making sure we’re getting it right for the people of Camden.
“By doing an investigation of existing work in our first few months we can get a full picture of how well these work for Camden. This means we’ll look at both the visible things, like ASBOs and dispersal notices, as well as the support for families and children to nip anti-social behaviour in the bud. ”
Deputy Leader, Cllr Andrew Marshall added: “We want to spend council resources on getting results. All current work designed to tackle anti-social behaviour will carry on as usual during this time while we analyse what has worked in Camden and what doesn't. Our joint priorities are clear. To protect the people of Camden in the most effective ways possible -working with the people of Camden, the police and voluntary organizations. To this end we will also forge a new and more effective partnership with the police and the CPS. We will press for a greater police focus to tackle serious crime such as drug dealing and systematically attack the borough’s drugs markets.”
Activities to tackle anti-social behaviour that will continue over the summer months include:
- the new borough-wide Controlled Drinking Zone designed to stop trouble caused by rowdy drinkers in the street (the zone starts from Thursday 8 June)
- a number of anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOs) currently going through the court system
- regular meetings of all agencies to keep track of potential offenders and find ways to turn their behaviour around for the benefit of the community
