ANTI-COMPETITIVE PRACTICES BY EUROPEAN ENERGY COMPANIES

16 February 2006

Today’s announcement by the European Commission that it will take legal action against some continental energy companies for anti-competitive practices please consider the following comment from the British Retail Consortium (BRC):

BRC Director General, Kevin Hawkins, says:

“We welcome today’s findings from the Commission enquiry – an issue we have been campaigning on for many months. These practices have been going on for far too long. Protectionist practices on the continent, in particular France and Germany, have severely hit British businesses. The retail sector is facing ever soaring energy costs running into tens of millions of pounds, and these practices are a contributing factor. We urge the EU Commission to act now to crack down on illegal protectionism.”
