Admissions code - 'selection by the front door' says NASUWT
27 May 2011
Commenting on the release of the Department for Education's revised draft Admissions Code, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union, said:
"A cursory glance at the code demonstrates that once again the public are not being told the whole truth on school admissions.
"Government spin suggests the changes are progressive measures with the potential to benefit children from the poorest backgrounds.
"The truth is there is no requirement in the code for schools to admit pupils on this basis and neither are there any levers to ensure they do.
"The fact that, under this code, grammar schools can increase pupil numbers without any requirement to consult, demonstrates the Government is deceiving the public when it claims it is not expanding the selective grammar school system.
"Forget about selection by the back door. This is selection by the front door.
"This Government already has form on duping the public and, therefore, this revised Code will require forensic examination."
