ABI response to employment minister's comments on health and safety

24 August 2011

James Dalton, Assistant Director of Property, Liability and Motor said: “We are pleased that the Government recognises that insurance is an enabler of activity rather than being used as an excuse for silly decisions about health and safety. It is incredibly important that people are safe, particularly when they work in jobs which carry risk to their health or lives.

"However, there have been an unfortunate number of cases where people cite health and safety rules or insurance as a reason not to do something very straightforward, which in fact carries no insurance implications at all. We are working with the Government to help people understand that they should be able to make their own decisions without the fear of being sued.”
