550m pounds loans for UK businesses to save energy

4 March 2011

Further to today's announcement that businesses will be given £550 million's worth of green loans to cut their energy use, Lord Teverson, Co-chair of a recent parliamentary inquiry into energy efficiency in business, responded:

“This is brilliant news for UK businesses willing to seize the financial opportunity that is energy efficiency. As illustrated by Carbon Connect's report, the savings in both cash and carbon make energy efficiency a no-brainer. What's more, not only do these savings benefit business, they benefit the whole nation in achieving a low-carbon future for Britain”.

Carbon Connect's report, “Energy Efficiency: The Business Opportunity” was launched on Tuesday by Chris Huhne MP, the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change.

The report highlights how government and business can work together to improve energy efficiency in the private sector, saving businesses £6 billion a year, cutting carbon, and safeguarding a fuel-secure future for Britian.

The report and its recommendations in full can be read here.

The loans will be provided by Siemens Financial Services in the UK, with the Carbon Trust assessing the cost, energy and carbon savings of the plans proposed by companies. The money is to be used for energy efficiency measures such as low-energy lighting and biomass heating: measures strongly endorsed by the Carbon Connect report, for small and large businesses across the UK.
