20 year old GMB member on TUC general council

20 YEAR OLD GMB MEMBER FROM LONDON ELECTED TO THE TUC GENERAL COUNCIL

London resident Fern McCaffrey who is currently at Brighton University takes up the post for the next 12 months

20 years old, Southwark resident Fern McCaffrey will serve on the General Council of the British Trade Union Congress for the coming 12 months. Fern will represent young trade union members. She was elected at the TUC Congress in London last week. Fern spoke twice during TUC Congress in London on the position of young workers in the economy and on the EU proposed trade agreement with India.

Fern was born in East London and in 1991 and studied at Moulsham High School in Chelmsford, Essex. She is currently in her final year of a BA in Social Science at the University of Brighton, Sussex. Fern has her own twitter feed which you can join at fernmccaffrey

Fern has been a GMB Member since she was 16 years old. She is also a member of the Labour Party and Young Labour and now is on the TUC General Council.

Fern McCaffrey, TUC General Council member and GMB members said, “I am really excited to be elected to this important role on the TUCGeneral Council. I am so grateful to my union, GMB and to the TUCCongress for this opportunity.

The current level of youth unemployment is devastating and the prospects for young workers are very bleak. Not only do they face problems getting work but house prices are sky high and so are rents. These young workers will also have very high levels of student debts.

I have a big job to do on the TUC General Council to successfully represent young trade unionists.”
