£1.6M win for justice and safer communities sector in Wales

12 August 2011

Skills for Justice have been awarded over £1.6m by the Wales European Funding Organisation (WEFO) to improve management skills in the Justice and Community Safety sectors in Wales.

Leadership Integrated for Tomorrow (LIFT) is a programme developed by Skills for Justice which for the first time brings together the Justice and Community Safety sectors in a collaborative project to identify those areas where working together is essential for delivery.

Effective inter-agency working is a key issue for the sector as identified in the 2010 Sector Skills Assessment. This means closer integration in a variety of ways, for instance information and data sharing and sharing of knowledge and experience, as well as the smooth co-operation between public, private and third sector providers.

Skills for Justice work with employers and partners in Government to identify those areas where working together is essential for delivery – for example mental health, witness care, public protection. Their role is to explore the skills issues in order to develop and implement solutions.

The WEFO funding will be used to develop accredited training courses for:

  • Under represented groups across the sector at aspiring, first line and middle management grades
  • Leadership skills
  • Performance management skills
  • Process improvement skills

Working closely with employers, Skills for Justice encourage focus and investment in employees who may have otherwise taken a back seat because of the pressure on front line delivery. This is particularly important if there is to be a modernization of the workforce, ensuring tasks are effectively devolved as far as possible.

Sian Morgan, Country Manager for Wales said "We are delighted that funding has been awarded to implement this significant project which is "unique" in that it incorporates the Public and Third Sector employers that are essential in delivering a joined-up approach to Justice Services."
