Timber Packaging and Pallet Confederation (TIMCON)

Timber is the most socially responsible and cost-effective solution for the storage, transport and movement of goods. While the production and processing of new timber pallets and packaging is highly energy-efficient, giving it an ultra-low carbon footprint when compared with other packaging materials; it is also the ability to reuse, recycling and repair that helps set timber packaging apart from the competition.

Throughout the UK, the timber packaging sector is responsible for providing 8,000 jobs directly and 30,000 indirectly and contributes significantly to the UK economy.

Timber is produced in sustainable forests, which are planted specifically to cater for demand for this material. As it stores carbon as it grows, timber helps tackle climate change. Timber has a negative carbon footprint and saves businesses 27kg of carbon for each new wooden pallet they use. By contrast, the vast majority of other packaging materials, notably plastics, adding significantly to the carbon impact of users.

TIMCON is dedicated to the promotion of timber as an environmental material that is re-usable, repairable and recyclable. Timber is a well-established material, which is up to six times lower in price than a plastic equivalent. It is the material of choice for grocery and many other supply chains and accounts for more than 90 per cent of the market.

The Timber Packaging and Pallet Confederation (TIMCON), represents British timber pallet and case manufacturers, export packers and pallet repairers in the UK, collectively turning over an estimated £350m. It plays a central role in the industry, offering guidance on issues such as legislation; marketing; technical consultancy; seminars; public relations; education; training; publications and insurance.
