Medical Defence Union

Dr Christine Tomkins
MDU Chief Executive

The Medical Defence Union (MDU), is the UK's leading medical defence organisation. We are a mutual not-for-profit organisation and our role is to protect the professional reputations of our members – doctors, dentists and other healthcare professionals. Established in 1885, we were the world's first medical defence organisation and have led the way ever since.

The MDU supports its members in a number of ways, which include:

• Assistance with clinical negligence claims
• Support with GMC investigations
• Help responding to patient complaints
• Help with dealing with the media
• Support at PCT and NHS Trust disciplinary hearings
• 24-hour medico-legal support

Another role of the MDU is to provide members with an authoritative voice in medical forums, with the government, with regulators and other influential bodies.

The Dental Defence Union (DDU) is the specialist dental division of The Medical Defence Union Limited (MDU).
