7th June 2009

Brooks Newmark (Con, Braintree) presented a ten minute rule bill entitled the Goalpost Safety Bill.

The purpose of the Bill, he said, was to make provision for "minimum standards for football goalposts" in order to improve safety when people are playing football.

Newmark said that there was a standard for goalposts introduced by the British Standards Institution in 2005 but that manufactures and buyers were "only recommended" to comply with it.

Newmark said the Bill will particularly target goalposts made "before 1996" and iterated that Britain was lagging behind other countries on this issue.

The Bill was agreed to be read a second time on Friday October 16.
