Online Purchasing of Goods and Services (Age Verification) Bill

A Bill to make it a requirement for the providers of goods and services and the providers of specific facilities enabling the purchase of such goods and services to make reasonable steps, in certain circumstances, to establish the age of customers making such purchases remotely; and for connected purposes.

Margaret Moran (Lab, Luton South) introduced a ten minute rule Bill on online purchasing and age verification in the Commons on January 22.

The Bill would require online retailers to abide by laws regarding age restricted goods and services.

She noted that most often there are no age checks online which allows children to buy age-restricted items. She commented; “self-regulation is not working”.

Moran talked about technological solutions to the problem with online age and ID checks. She noted that the online gaming industry is working towards resolving the issue.
