Winner of first Tory 'primary' announced

4th August 2009

Sarah Wollaston has won the first Conservative 'primary' contest, becoming the party's election candidate in the Totnes constituency.

Wollaston was chosen to contest the Devon seat following a postal vote in which all 69,000 electors in the constituency were able to vote.

She took 7,914 votes, while district councillor Sara Randall Johnson polled 5,495 votes and Torbay mayor Nick Bye took 3,088.

Speaking after the result, Wollaston said has a "big fight on her hands" ahead of the general election.

She stood on a platform of opposing a European 'super-state', and cited her experiences as a GP in tackling health issues.

And she had also spoken out about the impact of alcohol. "We have a government that is in bed with the drinks industry," Wollaston said. "We know what will work, we just need the politicians who will do it."

The seat became available after Anthony Steen announced that he would not stand again at the next election.

Steen became a victim of the expenses scandal after spending over £87,000 of taxpayers' money on his £1m home.
