Alistair Darling will press ahead with vehicle excise duty changes for cars registered from March 2001 onwards.

The details were first set out in last November's pre-Budget report, including, from May 2009, an increase in the number of VED bands from seven to thirteen in a bid to encourage drivers to choose greener cars.

And the chancellor said that the Department for Transport has worked with the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership to update the fuel economy labels for new vehicles.

It was also announced in the Budget that changes have been made to VED rules on refunds, six-month licences and imported vehicles.
