Tributes are continuing to be added to the Parliamentary book of condolence for North West Leicestershire MP David Taylor, as the main parties look to the question of choosing his successor.

There had initially been some doubt as to whether a by-election would be held so close to a General Election, expected in early May.

The decision lies with the government, but the prime minister’s office were not available for comment.

With the cost to the tax-payer of a by-election running at around £100,000 some have questioned efficiency of holding one with the dissolution of Parliament likely to be less than three months away.

Both Andrew Bridgen, the Conservative candidate for the constituency, and Lib Dem candidate Paul Reynolds have called for a by-election to be held.

Bridgen complained about the delay, saying that the people of North West Leicestershire are lacking proper representation in Parliament.

But Labour candidate Ross Wilmott said, "It is unfortunate that there is no representation for North West Leicestershire but given the time-scale it’s really a question of practicality."

By convention a by-election is held within three months of the incumbent resigning or passing away.

The earliest an election could now be held in North West Leicestershire is late February, with the winner likely be returned to Parliament for no more than five weeks before a General Election is called.

In the meantime David Taylor’s remaining staff are working with neighboring Labour MP Mark Todd’s office to complete existing case work.

As well as the Parliamentary book of condolence, David’s constituency office and website have been inundated with expressions of sympathy colleagues and constituents.

Taylor’s family have requested that anyone wishing to send flowers or gifts instead makes a donation to the British Heart Foundation. Cheques should be sent care of David Taylor’s Constituency Office, 17 Hotel Street, Coalville, LE67 3EQ.
