Tories reject 4x4 restrictions

The Conservatives have defended 4x4 drivers after a survey found two thirds of people want special taxes on sports utility vehicles.

A YouGov poll on Thursday found that Londoners are even more strongly in favour of introducing restrictions on the drivers Ken Livingstone has called "complete idiots".

The London mayor is waiting for the results of a study on whether and how limits might be placed on the vehicles 50 per cent of people want banned from city centres altogether.

The Green Party have proposed doubling the congestion charge for sports utility vehicles saying they cause a disproportionate amount of pollution.

But the Conservative transport spokesman in the Capital's assembly told ePolitix.com that any special measures for off road vehicles would be unfair and difficult to enforce.

Angie Bray said: "My problem is that 4x4 has become a very emotive term. People imagine that they are all enormous when in fact most of them are smaller than the majority of saloon cars.

"If people are complaining about the space they take up then it would be much more straightforward to tax big vehicles, not a particular type of vehicle.

"As I understand it, that already happens with engine size been taken into account."

Bray went on to say that banning or taxing 4x4s would lead to confusion and damage London's economy.

"People need to come to London in all kinds of vehicles. If we start banning a particular type where will it end? Will we ban lorries next?," she added.

"The best thing we can do is to invest in London's roads and stop clogging the place up with bus lanes so that all drivers can get around more easily."
