Gordon Brown has come under sustained personal attack from Conservative MPs.

In the Commons on Wednesday, the prime minister sought to rebut criticisms by calling on Opposition MPs to focus on policy issues.

But the comments came as Tory leader David Cameron also hit out at the prime minister's leadership and called for a general election to be held.

Stephen Crabb (Con, Preseli Pembrokeshire) asked about bullying in Number 10 amid allegations of heated rows involving Brown.

The prime minister failed to deny the claims, saying only that "any complaints are dealt with in the usual manner".

Andrew Rosindell (Con, Romford) highlighted the petition on the Number 10 website which calls on the prime minister to resign.

Brown responded that Conservative MPs "should be ashamed of the way they are treating the House of Commons" in not asking about policy.

Gerald Howarth (Con, Aldershot) mocked whether the prime minister had been successful in setting out his political vision.

And Brown again retorted that he was "ashamed" that Conservative MPs were not asking about the issues.

Edward Garnier (Con, Harborough) inquired how complaints about the Guardian article by communities secretary Hazel Blears would be dealt with.

The prime minister said it was not a "serious question" and noted that Conservative MPs were not asking about local or EU issues ahead of the June elections.

In a response to the questions on Twitter, Liberal Democrat MP Sandra Gidley suggested that "there would appear to be a Tory plot to be personal".

"Either that or none of 'em have constituency issues," she added.
