Speaker unhappy with Cameron's language

Mr Speaker has said he would "prefer not to hear" terms like 'mug' and 'bunch of hypocrites' used in the Commons.

Both were used by prime minister David Cameron at prime minister’s questions today to describe Ed Miliband and the Labour party respectively.

Kevin Brennan, Labour MP for Cardiff West, raised the matter on a point of order immediately after PMQs.

He asked for clarification of those terms are in order.

"I would like to be able to use the phrase 'mug' to describe the deputy prime minister in the House, knowing I would be in order, and also to use the phrase 'a bunch of hypocrites' as often as I can when describing this coalition government," Brennan said.

Mr Speaker replied that in his judgment "it is not a matter of order but of taste".

"For the avoidance of doubt, I would prefer not to hear either term used by any member," he added.

Speaker Bercow has complained on several occasions about rowdy behaviour at PMQs.

In June 2010 he called for a procedure committee review into whether PMQs delivers proper scrutiny.

"The ideal result for the House in my view, would be more scrutiny, more civility, less noise and less abuse masquerading as inquiry," he said.
