The Speaker of the House of Commons has been nominated for an award by gay rights group Stonewall.
John Bercow is one of five parliamentarians shortlisted for politician of the year.
Ben Summerskill, Stonewall's chief executive, said: "The Stonewall Awards recognise talented people who use their skills to champion lesbian, gay and bisexual equality in Britain.
"Every year the competition ups a notch – an encouraging sign that lesbian and gay visibility is gaining confidence."
Stonewall also hands out awards for journalist of the year, writer of the year, entertainer of the year, bigot of the year, sports personality of the year and hero of the year.
The awards ceremony, in its fourth year, is sponsored by Barclays and will be hosted by fashion expert Gok Wan at the Victoria and Albert Museum in November.
The nominees for politician of the year are Bercow, culture secretary Ben Bradshaw, foreign office minister Chris Bryant, Lib Dem spokesperson on youth and equality Lynne Featherstone and Labour peer Baroness Turner of Camden.
As the Speaker is an independent, no Conservative politician has been nominated this year.
During his time on the Tory benches Bercow was a strong supporter of lesbian and gay rights.
Previous winner of the Stonewall politician of the year are all from the Labour Party: Baroness Ashton, Alan Johnson and Lord Alli.
