Peers back Ulster consent move

Monday 30th June 2008 at 00:00

Peers have backed a move to lower the age of consent in Northern Ireland from 17 to 16.

The Democratic Unionist Party had objected to the move, insisting it was opposed by the Ulster public.

But peers voted by 146 to 66, a majority for the government of 80, in favour of the plans.

A motion to pass the Sexual Offences (Northern Ireland) Order, which extends the Sexual Offences Act 2003 to the province, was then approved without a vote.

Minister Lord Rooker told the House: "We have not seen any compelling evidence to suggest that the criminal law in Northern Ireland should continue to be at variance with the rest of the UK on this issue."

However, the Northern Ireland Assembly will have the ability repeal the Order if justice and policing is devolved.
