Welcoming the comments on education in the Prime Minister's speech to the Labour Party Conference in Brighton, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union, said:
"The Prime Minister has today drawn a line in the sand about the stark choice at the next election.
"World class education must be for the many and not the few. Therefore, more investment or less in education will be a key dividing line between the political parties.
"The Prime Minister has given his unequivocal commitment to investing more in schools and education.
"The guarantee to young people to expand the apprenticeships programme, to provide skilled internships and to provide new green jobs is a critical part of that investment.
"The NASUWT has long maintained that this is the only sensible option. At a time of recession public services, including education, hold the key to the nation's economic recovery."
