Foreign secretary David Miliband will today tell the Labour Party it should take pride in the government's foreign policy since coming to power.
Warning delegates at the party conference in Manchester against giving in to fatalism, he is expected to say that only progressive values can tackle the challenges of terrorism, climate change and global financial turmoil.
Miliband will speak on Monday afternoon as part of a debate called Britain in the World, which will also include speeches from defence secretary Des Browne and international development secretary Douglas Alexander.
Telling the conference that the party should have pride in its foreign policy achievements since 1997, Miliband is set to say: "We need to have the confidence in our values and our ability to apply them in radical news ways, not just at home but also on the world stage.
"This is our claim: that if you want order and stability in the relations between people and nations you need to put into practice progressive values."
