Latest e-skills Bulletin focuses on ICT staff training

e-skills UK, the sector Skills Council for IT and Telecoms, has published the latest issue of the e-skills Bulletin, the definitive source of information about changes in the demand/supply of ICT labour and skills in the UK. 
 
This issue includes the usual collection of labour market data together with a little more in depth analysis of training data provided by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Labour Force Survey and e-skills UK's own ICT Professionals survey - to provide a better understanding of the nature and incidence of training undertaken by ICT staff in the UK today.
 
Key findings for Q1.08 include:
 
- the number of permanent ICT staff is slighlty up on the previous quarter whilst the number of advertisements for ICT contractors is down with a number of specific roles/skills being particularly affected
- over the past year or so, the number of vacancies and average weekly earnings have consistently gone down within the ICT manufacturing sector and, to a lesser extent, amongst programming staff
- the highest incidence of training in the ICT arena occurs amongst 16-24 year olds and the lowest for 55-64 year olds - although the level of training opportunities are high for all age bands
- Telecoms staff, though the oldest ICT staff on average, are the most likely to receive training
- training of ICT staff is most likely to be delivered off-the-job and to be IT/Telecoms specific (i.e. as opposed to health and safety, etc)
