The cabinet has met at the site of the London 2012 Olympics Park in Stratford.

It was the first time the cabinet has convened since Parliament went into recess in July.

On the agenda was the meeting of G20 finance ministers in London on Friday.

Prime minister Gordon Brown and Olympics minister Tessa Jowell also visited parts of the Olympic site to see its progress first-hand, less than three years ahead of the opening ceremony.

Members of the cabinet were also making a series of visits to local communities around the park.

International development secretary Douglas Alexander and energy secretary Ed Miliband visited the East London Bangladeshi community to discuss their recent climate change trip to India and Bangladesh.

Justice secretary Jack Straw visited a youth offending team in Hackney while Commons leader Harriet Harman visited a project on human trafficking.

Gordon Brown became the first prime minister to hold a cabinet meeting outside of London for more than 80 years when they assembled in Birmingham in September 2008.

Today's meeting will be the seventh to be held away from Number 10. The other cities visited are Cardiff, Leeds, Liverpool, Southampton and Glasgow.
