The prime minister has insisted he will lead Labour into the next general election.
According to reports, Labour allies have told Gordon Brown to live up to the slogan he used at the start of his premiership: 'Not flash, just Gordon'.
But Brown faced criticism over his decision to use an interview with the Guardian on Saturday as an opportunity to demonstrate this.
Brown said in the interview that "to be honest, you could walk away from all this tomorrow", raising questions over his commitment to the job.
He was forced to launch a damage limitation exercise to convince supporters he was serious about the role.
Brown remained determined to win the next election, saying: "It is because of my purpose in politics that I am determined to lead Labour to the next general election.
"We must and we will win."
