Adonis unveils new trust schools

The government has announced that 115 more schools are to convert to trust status.

Schools minister Lord Adonis said on Wednesday that the move would help drive up education standards as pupils benefit from partnerships with local charities, businesses and colleges.

The new trusts come on top of the 42 already existing, after legislation in the 2006 Education Act paved the way for the reform under which schools can federate with local partners.

Lord Adonis also announced that the Department for Children, Schools and Families will hold a further round of applications to join the trust programme in June, focusing on those that will do the most to improve standards.

"Trusts are a fantastic way for schools to bring in the energy and expertise of external partners," he said.

"This expression of grassroots support from schools demonstrates their readiness to embrace the programme and bring about lasting benefits for their pupils.

"I believe all schools should be looking to the world of business, charities, higher and further education to improve standards and strengthen leadership."
