Adam Price backs Plaid's new gay group

19th February 2010

Plaid Cymru's only openly gay MP has given strong backing to a new group for LGBT people and their supporters.

Plaid Pride was launched this afternoon at the party's pre-election conference in Cardiff.

A representative from gay equality group Stonewall Cymru was on hand to lend his support, as was AM Bethan Jenkins.

Adam Price, the Plaid MP for Carmarthen East, is one of the small number of out gay men who have been elected to parliament.

He gave his full backing to the group, and said it would encourage people across Wales to be more open about their sexuality.

He praised Welsh rugby international Gareth Thomas for coming out, and wondered how long it will be before a high-profile football player does the same.

Plaid Pride will now consider whether to become an official section in the party.

It aims to "ensure that the needs of LGBT people across Wales" are addressed, as well as bringing Plaid's policies to the gay community.
