NETWORK RAIL BONUSES 'UNJUSTIFIABLE'

RAIL union TSSA has criticised bonus payments given to Network Railexecutives, revealed in the company's annual report, which was publishedtoday (Monday).

Last year TSSA won the biggest union recognition ballot there has been inthe rail industry, covering 4,500 managers engineers, technicians and otherprofessionals in Network Rail.

The union pointed to the fact that over 1 million in bonuses was paid outdespite Network Rail's failure to meet its punctuality target. Instead, bonuses were given for retention and administration.

TSSA General Secretary Richard Rosser said:

"Now Network Rail is a not-for-profit company the public expects it tobehave like a not-for-profit company.

"But these bonuses are nothing to do with the actual level of servicedelivered to the travelling public."Given the fact that punctuality targets have not been met, it is difficultto see how Network Rail can justify them.

"All future bonuses must be paid only when tough and demanding performancetargets are met so that executives are rewarded for clear serviceimprovements for passengers.

"It is time the previous fat-cat culture on the railway is laid to rest."
