Above ground swimming pools areusually round or oval and are modular in construction. Given a level site, they are incrediblysimple to build, lending themselves to self-build installation. All of the components come boxed and thewhole construction can be erected in a few hours to a day, depending onsize. Many above ground pools can nowbe installed partially in-ground, and with imaginative planning can belandscaped into your garden using fashionable decking, allowing you to sunbatheto the accompaniment of gently splashing water.

Above ground pools areparticularly economical to buy and are available from 2,500. Pools can come in varied sizes, lined with adurable heavy gauge waterproof liner, often with an attractive patterned base. Should you prefer a pool with a deep end,you can even find models, which with minimum excavation offer you the benefitsof more complex in-ground installations. If you are short of space, or want your pool mainly for exercise, acounter-current jet unit could be a viable option, allowing you to swim for aslong as you like without going anywhere!

Another simple and affordableswimming pool option is that of a self-build in-ground pool kit, which areavailable from 5,000. These kits aregalvanised steel panels or high quality polymer panels, which offer a wholehost of different pools in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit yourrequirements, and you can be swimming in less than seven days. This type of pool only really needs basicbuilding knowledge, and they come with all the equipment needed for watertreatment and heating.

Once a hole has been excavatedand a concrete base laid, often all that is required is a few tools key to fitthe panels together. It could not beeasier, and most pools come with a colourful step-by-step video to guide you onyour way. But if you feel morecomfortable with a professional getting involved, make sure you take on arecognised SPATA (Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association) swimming poolcontractor to help with your project.

The maintenance and upkeep of adomestic pool is now really easy. Itneed only take 30 minutes each week during the summer months to check the waterbalance and tidy up. Todays pools are so reliable that, properly looked after, they need never be emptied, except in the unlikely event of major repairwork. Off-season, a pool that has beenput to bed may only require one or two checks during the winter months.

For those who want to takeadvantage of their pool all year round, there is a variety of enclosuresavailable from a giant bubble, formulated from tough UV stabilised by PVC,tailored to fit over your pool, to retractable enclosures or even conservatorystyle enclosures.
