BG Group Press comment on Energy Policy White Paper

BG Group welcomes the UK Government’s Energy Policy White Paper, Our Energy Future, and believes it represents an excellent analysis of the opportunities and risks that face energy producers and consumers in the years to 2050.

We welcome the Government’s decision to move to a low-carbon regime and support their endorsement of a Europe-wide carbon-trading scheme as part of a broader, worldwide effort to address the challenge of global warming.  Natural gas has the lowest carbon content of all of the hydrocarbons and policy – at a UK and EU level and beyond – should reflect this.

We agree wholeheartedly with the Government’s conclusion that gas imports need not represent a threat to security of supply and that the solution is to develop a diverse range of sources of supply and a robust infrastructure network.  A truly liberalised European single gas market will help deliver this.

We are also delighted that the Government accepts that energy policy must be at the heart of foreign policy and that we must work with potential producer countries to ensure that energy trading secures for them social, environmental and developmental benefits.

We welcome the important role the White Paper identifies for MicroCHP and look forward to hearing more detailed proposals from the Government for supporting the technology.
