Clydeport pilots take strike action

17 April 2008

Unite members who provide the safe passage for ships on the River Clyde will begin two days of industrial action over management attempts to impose new working conditions from today (Thursday 17th April).

The Pilots Group, represented by the Unite trade union, say it has been forced into action as a result of Clydeport management's persistent harassment and intimidation of the group through the use of unjustified punitive action. The dispute has been exacerbated against the backdrop of worsening employment relations due to management attempts to impose new, lesser terms and conditions that would be detrimental to health amd safety of both the pilots and maritime traffic.

Unite regional officer, Andy MacFarlane, said: "It is regrettable that despite repeated attempts to conduct a constructive dialogue with management our members have been left with no alternative but to take this course of action.

"Management's actions have been shameless in threatening the pilots with disciplinary measures. These dedicated pilots - who are crucial to local maritime safety and economic prosperity - already operate in a high-skill, high pressure environment where there can be no margin for error in an industry where health and safety is paramount.

"Management need to think again. Given the recent history on the Clyde we will not allow our members working conditions to be compromised in any way."

The 48 hour stoppage will run from 06.00 Thursday 17th April until 06.00 Saturday 19th April affecting vessels entering Greenock Ocean Terminal and docks in Glasgow and Clydebank.
