Cable praises Clegg performance
Vince Cable

Vince Cable has said he is confident that Nick Clegg will "go from strength to strength" as leader of the Liberal Democrats.

And the party's Treasury spokesman, who took over as acting leader following the resignation of Sir Menzies Campbell, told ePolitix.com that Clegg "did extremely well" in his debut at prime minister's questions.

Clegg became Lib Dem leader last month after beating rival Chris Huhne by just 511 votes.

He made a confident first appearance, calling on the prime minister do more to help the poorest families meet their fuel bills.

Cable acknowledged there had been "a lot at stake" at Clegg's first session, with people "looking for any stumble or unintentional humour".

But he said the Lib Dem leader was "very confident, very fluent, asked a very good question that was treated with respect by the prime minister".

"It was in marked contrast to Mr Cameron's performance," he added. "I thought Nick came out of it extremely well."
