Vince Cable

Liberal Democrat MPs have chosen Vince Cable as their new deputy leader.

The party's Treasury spokesman will take over the role vacated by Sir Menzies Campbell following his election as Lib Dem leader.

Following the announcement, Cable said he was "delighted and honoured to take up this role".

"The Liberal Democrat team in Westminster is as strong and powerful as ever," he added.

"I'm greatly looking forward to working alongside our new leader, Menzies Campbell, to take the party to still greater electoral heights.

"My key priority in the coming weeks will be to focus on the upcoming local elections, where we will once again show that the Liberal Democrats are the best representatives for local communities up and down the country."

And Sir Menzies Campbell said: "I am delighted that Vince Cable has been elected.

"Vince's extensive political experience and policy expertise will provide a further boost to a team determined to improve our performance in the May local elections.

"Let me also take this opportunity to thank all the candidates. They reflect the impressive depth of the Liberal Democrat talent pool."
