Assembly's concern at London 'super casinos'

A London assembly report has expressed reservations about the development of new 'super casinos' in the capital.

The study from the economic development committee called for action to prevent the potential downsides of noise, problem gambling and crime.

But there was an acceptance that the casinos could regenerate run-down areas, boost London's appeal as a tourist destination and create new jobs in the leisure industry.

The committee said that casinos should not be located near housing or in mixed-use town centre developments containing residential areas.

Dee Doocey, chairman of the committee, said: "There are many practical implications. Londoners must enjoy the benefits and not suffer any disadvantages if the capital is to be home to more gambling venues."

There was a call for the mayor to revise his blueprint for London to consider regional casinos and a warning that the 'super casinos' should have good public transport links and the ability to cope with car journeys.

"We cannot afford to be complacent," added Doocey.

"Fears about casinos' detrimental effects to local communities must be properly addressed.

"Super-casinos could change the social and economic fabric of the capital."
