Howard shortlisted for top award
Michael Howard
House Magazine Awards 2005

Outgoing Conservative leader Michael Howard is among the parliamentarians shortlisted for this year's House Magazine Awards.

As the political focus switches to the battle between David Cameron and David Davis to take over his role, Howard is among those on the shortlist to become 'opposition politician of the year'.

The award recognises the MP or peer who has best held the government to account in the last year.

Also on the same shortlist are fellow Conservatives Dominic Grieve and Lord Kingsland, and Liberal Democrat MP David Heath.

Elsewhere, Cabinet ministers Jack Straw and Tessa Jowell are also shortlisted for the 'minister of the year' award.

They are joined by Home Office minister Paul Goggins and Department for Constitutional Affairs minister Baroness Ashton of Upholland.

New MPs are also recognised in the 'maiden speech of the year' category - with Katy Clark, Dan Rogerson, Shahid Malik and Geoffrey Cox on the shortlist.

Among those nominated for 'backbencher of the year' are Conservative MP John Bercow and Labour MP Kelvin Hopkins.

The 'peer of the year' award for the most effective member of the House of Lords could go to either Lord Lester, Lord Howell of Guildford, Baroness Mallalieu or Lord Lloyd of Berwick.

The awards are organised by The House Magazine - published by Dod's Parliamentary Communications, owners of ePolitix.com - and held in association with Atos Origin.

Richard Hall, the magazine's managing editor, said: "The House Awards are highly valued by politicians as they are recognition of respect across the party political divide."

Voting by MPs and peers closes on November 11 with the winners announced at a ceremony on December 8.
