Pope buried in St Peter's crypt

Pope's funeral: World leaders attended

Tens of thousands of mourners, including the leaders of Britain's major political parties, have attended the funeral of Pope John Paul II.

Campaigning in the general election was put on hold as Tony Blair, Michael Howard and Charles Kennedy attended the ceremony in Rome.

The moratorium is expected to last until after the royal wedding, out of respect for Prince Charles and the late pontiff.

The funeral brought to an end a frantic first three days of campaigning for the May 5 election, which was called by Blair on Tuesday.

The leaders paid tribute to the Catholic leader who died after a long illness last Saturday at the age of 84.
