Clinton and PM among Milosevic witnesses
Tony Blair and Bill Clinton are among a list of people Slobodan Milosevic wants to call as witnesses, according to his legal adviser.
Both were key leaders during the bombing of Belgrade during the 1999 conflict in Kosovo.
According to lawyer Zdenko Tomanovic, the list also includes former US secretary of state Madeleine Albright and former UK foreign secretary Robin Cook.
The former Yugoslav president is charged with crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo during the war.
Although he has submitted 1,631 names, it will be up to the UN war crimes tribunal in the Hague to decide which will actually appear when he begins his defence on 8 June.
"The mere fact that he submitted all these names doesn't necessarily mean that all of these witnesses will appear," said spokesman Jim Landale.
"All we've got at the moment is a submission by the accused of witnesses he would like to call."
However, Tomanovic insists that many will be allowed to appear.
Prosecutors rested their case in February, due to the illnesses both of Milosevic and the presiding judge Richard May, who later resigned on health grounds.
Milosevic has continued to question the legitimacy of the court, and has refused to enter a plea - a plea of not guilty was recorded on his behalf.
