Allotment Rent Protest

At the annual meeting of the borough’s allotment holders’ representatives and the Council, some allotment representatives will express growing unhappiness at the escalation of the rents.  Rent increases have far exceeded the rate of inflation and have made Richmond the highest rent borough in London apart from Wandsworth.

Vincent Cable MP has written to the Council’s Chief Executive on behalf of some Twickenham allotment holders who are worried at the drift to higher rents and the lack of responsiveness by the Council to their concerns.

Vincent Cable said: “I strongly support local allotment holders who derive great pleasure from a healthy and environmentally friendly pastime.  The Council has a declared policy of linking rents to inflation but they have risen 20% in the last two years and have doubled over a decade.  Richmond rents are now far higher than in Kingston, Hounslow and comparable London boroughs.”
