Local MP backs action on climate change
Sylvia Heal has welcomed new Government plans to build a low carbon economy, reduce emissions and tackle climate change.
Three new Government Bills will be introduced to help the UK reduce its carbon emissions by 2050 and move to greener energy sources. The Government is committed to a 60% reduction in emissions by 2050 and is considering increasing the target to 80%.
The UK aims to increase renewable sources of energy to 20% by 2020. Other measures include ensuring all new homes are carbon neutral by 2016 and reducing packaging waste.
A new telephone line, website and network of advice centres will be put in place to provide households with easy access to an energy audit, give advice on energy and water efficiency as well as recycling and green travel.
Sylvia Heal MP said: “It is important that all of us take the issue of climate change seriously and remember we can play our part. From my post bag I am aware of just how important this issue is for my constituents.
“I am pleased the Government are set to introduce these new measures that will really help tackle the issue. It will put in place the biggest improvement to home energy efficiency in history, with one in three homes offered help to improve their carbon footprint and potential savings of over £100 per year for the typical household.”
