Sylvia backs launch of internet safety website
Sylvia Heal MP for Halesowen and Rowley Regis has today welcomed the launch of a new website www.thinkuknow.co.uk aimed at increasing children’s awareness of the internet dangers that exist.
The site has different sections targeting different age groups. For children aged 8-10 there is a range of information on how to use the internet to have fun, stay in control and report a problem if needed. Through different games and fun activities children learn about the dangers that exist and how to deal with them.
For older children between the ages of 11-16 there are similar safety tips on how to deal with threatening situations and stay safe when on the internet whether they be in a chat room, a social networking site, or writing their own blog.
The website has a special section for teachers and parents who once registered can download a range of different resources including lesson plans, videos, fact sheets and posters.
Sylvia Heal MP said: “I know is not always possible for parents to watch over their children while they are on the computer, I hope that families will see this new website as one way of alerting young people to the possible dangers of the internet and how to deal with them.
“The fact the site has a range of sections tailored to different age ranges, makes it an effective way for young people to learn, and the special information for teachers and parents I hope will prove to be a useful resource.”
