Sylvia Heal has backed Government action on knives
Sylvia Heal has welcomed Gordon Brown’s pledge that the Government will take a zero tolerance approach to people carrying knives.
In recent months concern has grown about the culture of carrying around knives. The Government have pledged to take action to ease people’s fears and crack down on those who carry knives or guns, where before police may have cautioned people there will now be a presumption of prosecution.
Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary has backed moves to install scanning arches outside Britain’s toughest secondary schools. The plan aims to stop pupils carrying weapons to school and reduce knife crime, and has received backing from senior police officers and head teachers.
Sylvia Heal MP said: “While knife crime is still rare it has become more of an issue in recent years. I am pleased the Government is committed to tackling the issue and I hope this tough stance will make people realise that it isn’t cool to carry knives, it doesn’t make people safer and is completely unacceptable.”
