Sylvia Heal MP marks International Workers Memorial Day

Sylvia Heal, MP for Halesowen and Rowley Regis has organised a ceremony to mark International Workers Memorial Day and remember those who have died in the workplace. Sylvia will be joined by colleagues from the GMB and other local Trade Unions.
The event will take place at 11am on Monday 28th April in the grounds of Halesowen Parish Church at the site of the International Workers Memorial tree. There will be a short service conducted by Rev. Anthony Pettit to remember those who have died. The event is open to any member of the public who wishes to attend.

International Workers’ Memorial Day is a day of mourning held across the world every year. It originated in Canada in 1989 and has since been a chance for communities, workers and Trade Unions to recognise workers who have been killed or injured while at work. The theme for Workers Memorial Day in 2008 is “good occupational health for all workers”.
Sylvia Heal MP said:  “The aim of International Workers Memorial Day has always been "remember the dead: fight for the living" the day is therefore an opportunity to remember those killed or injured at work as well as a chance to look to the future at ways in which workers can be protected and safety at work improved.

“Worldwide millions die each year as a result of workplace hazards. Improvements in working conditions have been made but the toll of workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths still remains far to high.”
