Rosie celebrates birthday of WWI singing legend

Local Labour MP Rosie Winterton passed on her best wishes to Dame Vera Lynn, who celebrated her 90th birthday at the Houses of Parliament last week.

Dame Vera was known as "The Forces' Sweetheart" during the Second World War. She recorded many famous songs of the era, including "White Cliffs of Dover" and "We'll Meet Again". Her radio series recorded songs and sent messages to the forces stationed abroad, helping to boost morale. Dame Vera continued in the music industry after the War, enjoying much success both in the UK and overseas.

Rosie says
“I wish Dame Vera all the best on her birthday. She was, and continues to remain, dedicated to the support of British troops both abroad and at home. Her music was an inspiration to the nation at a time of need, and she continues to be a symbol of hope, courage and dedication.”

In 1969, Dame Vera was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire and in 1975 a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. She has been active in charity work for both breast cancer and cerebral palsy.
