HEADWAY DONCASTER - LE TOUR DE ASDA
Rosie Winterton, MP for Doncaster Central will be at the Asda Superstore, Nr. The Dome, off Bawtry Road on Monday 4 September at 1.00 pm to meet with Dominic Hurley, as part of a profile and fund raising event for Headway Doncaster.
Dominic Hurley, a brain injury survivor and son of the Yorkshire Group Support Officer, Ann Hurley and Chair of Headway Rotherham, Bill Hurley, is undertaking ‘Le Tour de Asda’ which is the ‘Le Tour de France’ – 2,261 miles in 23 days but on exercise bikes. It is taking place at Asda stores in Doncaster, Sheffield and Rotherham to raise awareness of brain injury and the work of Headway and also to help raise funds for branches of Headway throughout the Yorkshire region.
Rosie says
“Headway Doncaster offers a very important service providing information and support to local people who have sustained brain injury, their families and carers.
I am delighted to have been invited to meet with Dominic and I hope that people will support him and take time to visit the information stand.”
Dominic will be cycling on a static bicycle and has undertaken a nutritional and exercise programme, working hard to get fit and prepared for this event. He will be in the Asda Doncaster store from 1st to 6th September.
Dominic says
“After my parents were told I may never walk or talk again because of a brain injury sustained while falling from a moped in Cyprus in 1994, I thought that doing this kind of thing would never be possible. I’m doing this to show that ‘If I can, then you can.
Everybody in the world is disabled, or in other words un abled. You have to look at what you can do not what you can’t. I can ride a bike for a long time, and I can use computers to design websites and edit videos. What I can’t do like run or use my right arm properly doesn’t matter. I can do what many can’t, and what I can do makes me happy and I want to show the world that you can be happy with what you have.”
Brain injury can affect people both in a physical way, e.g. their ability to walk, balance etc, and in relation to the way in which their brain functions, e.g. memory, concentration and motivation. A brain injury can alter someone’s personality and behaviour.
Headway Doncaster helps people to learn how to cope and live with the problems created as a result of their injury. They hold regular social and educational events including presentations on anger management, speech therapy, ten-pin bowling, meals out, pub quizzes, (all with medical back up if needed.)
