BALBY CARR COMMUNITY SPORTS COLLEGE CELEBRATES AWARDS PRESENTED BY ROSIE
Rosie Winterton, MP for Doncaster Central will be at the City Learning Centre on Friday 12 January at 9.45 am to present two awards, the Healthy Schools Award to the College and the Princess Diana of Wales Memorial Award to student Sarah Philipson.
This is the third year in a row that the college have been awarded the Princess Diana of Wales Memorial Award, this year achieved for their anti bullying programme that works in partnership with South Yorkshire Police. Amanda Taylor, Behaviour and Learning Support Co-Coordinator at the college has also promoted the successful programme to other schools.
Sarah Philipson, a pupil, has been chosen for the award after having completed the anti bullying programme which includes awareness of bullying and anger management, and going on to support other students who were experiencing difficulties. Sarah is now a peer mentor for victims of bullying. Balby Carr also have a confidential email service to support students who do not want to talk in school. All students are supported and encouraged to tell about their difficulties with bullying.
Rosie says “It is a real pleasure to have been invited to present two very important awards at Balby Carr Community Sports College.
Bullying at school can have a lasting impression well into adulthood and it is encouraging that the pupils themselves are taking on the challenge to tackle this with the full support of the school, parents and the police. I congratulate Sarah for winning the award and everyone else involved in this successful programme.
I also congratulate the school on being the first in Doncaster to have been awarded the Healthy Schools Award. This shows that the college is taking the health of their pupils seriously and is working hard under the government funded programme aimed at reducing health inequalities, promoting social inclusion and raising educational standards, for the benefit of all the students”
Martin Craig – Head teacher says “We are extremely pleased that Sarah has been recognised for the award. This is the third year running a student from Balby Carr has achieved the Princess Diana Award which highlights the excellent anti bullying programme.
The Healthy Schools Award is a well deserved testament to the hard work of all the staff and students and an integral part of our sports college vision.”
The Healthy Schools Award is a national award and Balby Carr Community Sports College is the first school in Doncaster to receive the award under the new audit system. To do this they had to demonstrate they had achieved a very high standard in four key areas.
• Physical Activity – Students have a diverse range of practical activities to promote fit and healthy lifestyle.
• Healthy Eating – The quality of Meals provided is excellent and the school points out an increased take up from students despite chips and junk food being off the menu.
• Emotional Health and Well Being – Ensuring students are well cared for and have someone to talk to.
• Personal Health and Social Education – strong aspect of the school’s curriculum covering sex education and careers guidance plus how to lead a healthy and fulfilling life.
Doncaster Healthy Schools Programme, a partnership between Doncaster Council and the Health Community, encourages and supports schools in the implementation of the National Healthy School Programme and is the local accreditation body for National Healthy School Status.
