Junior Bowling Green Fees

Cllr Pam Challis

Leader – Castle Point Borough Council

Castle Point Borough Council

Kiln Road, Thundersley

Essex   SS7 1TF

I enclose herewith copy of an email I received from David Fulcher regarding Bowling Club fees for youngsters.

I believe this may be an oversight on the Council’s part and I trust you will agree and will remedy the situation by reducing the fees charged to youngsters.

We should be doing all we can to make our public facilities available to young people and encourage them to use them.  It is important to promote healthy, outdoor activity and to keep youngsters off the streets.  It is also important to promote good behaviour and discipline through sport and I hope you agree.

These facilities are held by the Council in trust for the public, which owns the facilities, and I urge you to change the Council’s policy to ensure that young people can have access.  I also refer you to the fact that Southend on Sea Borough Council charges approximately half the fee that Castle Point charges.

I look forward to hearing from you as soon possible and may I thank you for considering this matter.  In view of the importance of this matter, I am making this correspondence available to the press.

With all good wishes,

Yours ever,

Bob Spink MP

Subject: Junior Bowling Green Fees

Hello Bob!

As Child Protection Officer and one of the coaches at South Benfleet Bowling Club, I am writing to you about the green fees for the youngsters that we coach, this being £35.00 per annum.

I, and many other members of the Club, feel this is far too high for these junior members  to have to pay  when they join the Club.  I have been told that Southend Council only charge a fee of £20.00 per annum.

Over the last few summers we have had problems with youngsters throwing stones over the hedges whilst members are on the green.  .

I am presently negotiating with Dawn Catley (teacher at Castle View School) for myself and the other coaches to attend the  schools in the area to try to encourage youngsters to join the Club and play bowls, but feel with these high fees it is difficult.

We are all trying to stop vandalism and keep children off the streets and hopefully Castle Point will support us.

I should appreciate it if you could look into this matter for me.
