‘In my role as Liberal Democrats Shadow Defence Secretary it gives me great pleasure to be able to help publicise National Veterans Day on 27 June.

‘Now in its third year Government funding is available to support locally organised community events.

‘Locally and nationality it is important that we get our youngsters involved to promote interaction between schools and our veterans.

‘Traditionally we think of terms of WW1 and WW2 veterans, in fact in the 94 years since the outbreak of WW1 there have been numerous conflicts involving our Armed Forces around the world.

‘The challenge for organisers is to reflect this diversity as well as recognising the contribution by the commonwealth and other nations, while fostering an appreciated of events with the younger generation.’

Derek Twigg Minister for veterans says:

‘Veterans Day 2007 was a big success and I am looking forward to an even better range of events and celebrations this year. I would encourage everyone to get involved in their Veterans Day event and say thank you to the brave ex-Service men and women who live amongst us.’
