Mike Hall MP encourages people to recycle Christmas cards

Mike Hall MP urges Weaver Vale residents to support the Woodland Trust’s bid to recycle 100 million Xmas cards to plant 24,000 trees

Mike Hall MP is encouraging people to extend the season of goodwill by popping their Christmas cards in recycling bins at WH Smith1, Tesco2, TK Maxx and Marks and Spencer3 stores for charity.

The Woodland Trust’s Christmas Card Recycling Scheme, supported by Recycle Now, aims to collect 100 million cards which will generate enough money to plant 24,000 trees – the equivalent of 48 football pitches of woodland.

It is estimated that last year’s efforts saved 2,400 tonnes of CO24, which is the same impact as taking over 700 cars off the road or avoiding over 100 flights.

Sue Holden, chief executive of the Woodland Trust, which has collected 443 million cards since the scheme began 10 years ago, says: “Everyone who supports the Trust by recycling their cards is helping us to plant thousands of new trees throughout the UK.”

Mike Hall MP said:

“I am delighted to be part of the Woodland Trust and Recycle Now’s successful and worthwhile campaign. I am a keen recycler myself and will be taking all of my Christmas cards this year to participating stores. It's a great way for people to get their New Year off to a 'greener' start and get into the recycling habit."

The scheme is supported by Recycle Now the national recycling campaign for England. Fridey Cordingley from Recycle Now, says: “Christmas is a time when we all create too much waste – usually over three million tonnes.  Recycling Christmas cards for the Woodland Trust is a simple way to help reduce this and help a worthwhile cause at the same time.  So if you are off to the sales or to exchange that unwanted Christmas gift, don’t forget to take your cards with you and pop them in your nearest recycling box.”
